Which of these critters are not like the others?

Just a little photographic teaser today. Below are six fiber shots taken last week. One of the animals featured has won a banner before and is slated to start working as a legit Herdsire this coming spring. Two others are on the outside looking in of the depth chart for white males born in 2011 (that is there are at least 3 other juvenile white boys that are more likely to make our show string before them…for now anyway). The other 3 boys are all fiber pets, two of them since the day they were born. The point of this being that it is getting to be increasingly difficult to classify the quality of an alpaca fleece based solely upon a fiber split and a resulting photo. Even the fleeces of those not quite making grade can look pretty snazzy at a glance…

  1. Well which ones are they?? It is hard to tell just by a picture, specially in a breeding class farm as yours! I might go with #1, #3 & #6, by picture alone, without knowing what the microns and results were? Either way that is a nice problem to have.

    1. Hi Paul,

Rather than belabor the point I’ll just point you to my reply to Scott’s comment above. It goes without saying that without being able to actually feel the handles of the fleeces in question as well as perceive the density it is kind of a loaded question. Rather unfair really. #1 (Booger) though a perfectly sweet animal, just had his first and last fifteen minutes of fame to be sure! See you in April at the NAAS, take care! -Ian

    1. Hi Scott,

      You’re 1 for 3!

#1 is indeed the infamous Booger on what was admittedly a pretty good day by his standards.
#2 is a juvenile named Vivacious (an LG/Precocious cross out of the 4P Amanda line) who is on the depth bubble.
#3 is the other bubble boy, Thorn (I-Star/Elite Legend cross) who was shorn in late August and hence has a shorter staple.
#4 is CCNF Tenacious as an older yearling who was the RC at the National Fleece show last year.
#5 is a yearling pet boy named Octavio.
#6 is another pet-before-he-was-dry named Little John.

Thanks for playing! Hope you guys are well…Ian
