I miss my coffee…

Sorry but this has NOTHING to do with alpacas. I have to cut back my coffee? Really? *@@#%%%!!!

This is what happens when you go and get a checkup.  All right, so maybe 4 daily large mugs of high-test was a bit much. As a relatively healthy 39 year old I had avoided going to the doctor or getting a physical for many years. OK, truth be told for 18 years to be exact. I have previously avoided a docs office to such an extent that several years ago it’s even highly probable that I hobbled around for 2+ months on what was a foot fracture suffered in a pickup soccer game. It got better over time, I just did my best Captain Ahab in the mean time. There is a certain undeniable stubbornness in my family line. I am also, however, the husband of one unbelievably amazing woman and the  father of two wonderful kids whom I would very much like to see grow to adulthood and perhaps (if they choose) one day have families of their own. It was time to do the right thing in this regard and stop being a wuss.

So yesterday I was told that because of my blood pressure being borderline high that my caffeine intake needed to lessen. Given that those 4 mugs really equated to at least 8 fluid cups of coffee I should be able to moderate at least a bit. Maybe 1 mug in the morning and 1 mug after lunch? I am attempting to substitute herbal tea the rest of the time in the hope that I can fool myself into enjoying the hot liquid thing. Sorry, decaf coffee is not an option any more than whiskey or vodka would be without the alcohol. Serves no purpose and tastes like you-know-what: boy, sign me up! Oh well. While my body adjusts to a lower level of caffeine in my bloodstream we shall try hard not to be grumpy with the beloveds. On the bright side I might start sleeping a little better, thus requiring less pick-me-up in the AM. For now at least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. More soon…

  1. Hey Ian,

That’s what’s happen when you start to get old! (and imagine those of us who need to add 20 more years in the balance….%$&^!! )
There are some real good decaf coffee..try “Juan Valdez” decaf. Hey, if it works for over speed Colombians (I will not mention names, here) it should work with you and if nobody tell you it’s a decaf…You will never notice it, and it is sold in wallmart….On the other end maybe you can keep your coffees and stop your favorite “Energy drink” with tutti fruity test.
    🙂

  2. Wow Ian – – all this time I thought you were just one hyper boy….. didn’t know all that java kept you moving. Did the doc say that you can counteract the coffee-causing hypertension by having a few martinis in the evening???? Sounds good anyways!
    Happy Holidays,
    Sue

  3. Hahahahaha! Old age is catching up to you too?! I have been taking Metaprolol for my high blood pressure and pre ventricular contractions. You should try it instead of cutting back on the coffee and getting more exercise. They tried to get me to do that too but popping the pills is much easier!
