Spring runoff?

Well it’s not supposed to be! Welcome to the infamous January thaw. After 12+ hours of steady rain here, we are dealing with a problem that we normally don’t encounter until March. With the ground frozen, all of that water has had fewer places to go and drain off, meaning that it’ found its way into the farm’s low spots: namely the north side corrals of both the Main Barn and CCNF Arena. While we of course have drainage swales as well as general grading around those building to minimize this sort of thing, ice has a way of complicating matters. As such the animals on that side of both barns are all locked inside for at least today while we go about channeling the water elsewhere (as in chipping little canals through the sheet of ice). If there is any silver lining in all of this — completely applying the jinx here — it’s that at least the forecast is relatively mild for the next few days with highs consistently above freezing, so that hopefully we can get the situation under control. Cas-Cad-Nac Farm: quality alpacas and an ice rink too? I think we’ll just stick with the alpaca part for now!

  1. Hey Ian,

Now if you could outfit those alpacas with some hockey gear and throw down a puck or two, you could sell tickets!!! Kind of goes with the old saying about lemons and lemonade, right?
