What IS that thing hanging out of your rear end????

So it may or may not take a village in the end but apparently the visiting females (all but 1 of whom have never had a cria of their own before) at the Main Barn certainly seemed to feel that this birthing thing required some serious and close supervision. The laboring female in question by the way, CCNF Bringing Sexy Back, belongs to our friend Pam DesJardins of OWL Acres Alpacas. We had promised Pam last year while doing a late fall breeding that if it took, we would even take her girl back up here to have her baby this fall as we are better equipped for silly things like cold weather birthing. The fertility fairy of course has a sardonic sense of humor and took it upon herself at the moment those words passed our lips to create the little dude that was born yesterday. A very nice little dude based upon early returns it should be said who will end up being one of the final 5 or 6 SuperNova kids ever born. In any case, all’s well that ends well.

For those of you that have not seen a maiden (1st time mom) birth before, you will see some blood at the very end of the video as the cria finally pops out. Please rest assured that that is completely normal, most likely either slight umbilical bleeding and/or the result of what remains of a vaginal constriction being broken down as the cria moves down the birth canal.

  1. I wasn’t sure if I should laugh hysterically at that video, or just say “Awwwww,” so I did both! Poor girl looked like she just wanted a little privacy to give birth!
